Milwaukee, WI: Fuel Cafe

Over the holidays, we visited Fuel Cafe in Walker’s Point for appetizers and good company.

Although the original location is considered a Milwaukee institution, this visit was our first to either of the Fuel Cafes.

We decided to give their Bloody Mary a go:

Spice: Not too spicy, but tasty.

Mix: Housemade, with your choice of vodka or blanco tequila

Chaser: Your choice!

Fixin’s: Cheese curds and two olives (although the menu boasts bacon!)

Price: $8

This Bloody Mary was very tasty and we liked the fact that let you choose both your liquor and your chaser (they have a large variety of beers to choose from). The price was reasonable and our only “complaint” is that the menu lists bacon as a fixin’, but clearly our drink missed that memo.

All of the appetizers we enjoyed were delicious and the entrees looked delectable as well. We’ll be back, Fuel Cafe! Put on the bacon!

 

Baraboo, WI: Driftless Glen Distillery

In the fall, we visited Driftless Glen Distillery in Baraboo, Wisconsin where we had to try the Driftless Bloody.

Spice: Not too spicy, but tasty.

Mix: Jimmy Luv’s Mix, made with Driftless Glen 80 Proof Vodka

Chaser: None Offered

Fixin’s: Neuske’s Applewood Smoked Bacon, Homemade Pickle, Two Olives, Salted Rim

Price: $10

While we enjoyed our experience at this restaurant, we weren’t overly excited about the Bloody Mary. We are not huge fans of Jimmy Luv’s mix, so that was a poor start. That, coupled with the $10 price point, left a bit to be desired. We did, however, enjoy the bacon and homemade pickle–that was a nice touch, plus the fact that they make their own vodka.

If were to find ourselves back in Baraboo, we’d definitely return to this restaurant, but we’d probably try an alternative cocktail featuring another one of their great spirits.

Wauwatosa, WI: Tosa Bowl & Bun

We recently stumbled upon a great soup and sandwich spot in Wauwatosa called Tosa Bowl & Bun.

An affordable deli with a soup du jour by day, Tosa Bowl and Bun also offers many dinner specials as well as take and bake and catering options.

We were so happy to find a good soup spot in the area and even happier when we realized they publish their daily soup offerings in calendar format online so you can plan ahead.

Those things alone make this a great spot to grab lunch, especially during these trying winter months, but add in the cute decor that is more than a nod to the building’s bowling alley roots (think tables made out of the wood from the lanes) and $4 Bloodies on Saturdays and you’ve got yourself a winner.

Yes, that’s right. Just $4 gets you this:

Now we wouldn’t come here specifically for this Bloody Mary, but we would come here especially for the soups….so if you’re offering a $4 Bloody, who would we be to turn that down? It’s pretty average and low on the fixin’s, which would normally be a hindrance, but at that price point, who can resist a Bloody Mary to pair with their tomato bisque?

We highly recommend you check out Tosa Bowl and Bun–it will become one of your regular lunch spots!

West Allis, WI: The Farmer’s Wife

Located on a corner in a West Allis neighborhood, unsuspecting cars might drive past this gem everyday, thinking it is just another house; however, they are unwittingly missing out on a very special restaurant.

The Farmer’s Wife might just be West Allis’ best-kept secret.

From their site: “The Farmer’s Wife is based on some pretty basic ideas.  Do things like our grandparents did.  Work hard, Eat clean, Spend quality time with people we want to share it with.  That’s all!”

The restaurant sources ingredients from local farmers, meat handlers and RSA’s such as, Kettle Range Meats, Growing Power, LOTFOTL, and West Allis Farmer’s Market. They have also partnered with Anodyne Coffee.

We had been in here for lunch a few times, but today was the first time we checked out their brunch; upon arrival, we found out that here is a Bloody Mary Bar on Sundays from 10am to 2pm!

They begin by serving you a glass of vodka and a chaser. You use their homemade Bloody Mary mix and your favorite spices to mix your drink–then add your skewers full of toppings!

Spice: Not too spicy, but you can add more spices to appease your palate.

Mix: Homemade

Chaser: Choose from many offerings. Today we had Surly.

Fixin’s: See above for the plethora of options, including cheese curds!

Price: $6

The Bloody Mary was delicious and the price was just right. Our drinks paired perfectly with our most appropriate brunch orders as well: My two dining partners and I enjoyed the Brunch Burger, the Brunch Poutine and the Brunch Wrap and cups of coffee. We all left full and happy…. we will be back!

New Orleans, LA:Olde NOLA Cookery

On a recent trip to New Orleans, we stopped into the Olde NOLA Cookery on the world-famous Bourbon Street for some gator bites, oysters, po’ boys and gumbo.

When we saw the Rajun Cajun Bloody Mary on the menu, we knew we had to give that a shot as well.

Spice: Not too spicy.

Mix: House-infused Absolut Peppar Vodka, with their own Bloody Mary Mix

Chaser: None.

Fixin’s: The menu claims they drink includes  sun-dried tomatoes, cocktail onions, spicy green beans, and olives; however, on our visit we only got green beans, peppers, olives and a lemon and a lime.

Price: $10

This Bloody Mary was tasty, but were not sure it was worth the price. The food here, however, will satisfy your hankerin’ for some Southern Cookin’, so if you’re looking for a place to get your fried food fix, stop in here. Maybe just try a Hurricane instead.

West Allis, WI: Danny Lynch’s Pub

On a recent Sunday, we headed back to West Allis to take in a Packers game.

This was our first time at Lynch’s Pub and we definitely felt a bit out of place amongst the regulars. Protective of their local watering hole, we did not feel welcomed by the other patrons, although the staff was perfectly pleasant.

They served free subs and chips at halftime, prize raffles and had a $5 Bloody Mary special, so it’s no wonder the regulars were wary of newcomers encroaching on the goodness.

Mix: Unsure.

Chaser: Yes-MGD or Miller Lite

Fixin’s: Preztel, Bacon, dill pickle, celery, olives, mushroom, peppers, brussels sprout, cheese and a beefstick

Price: $5

This Bloody was very good and you really can’t beat the price. We haven’t had a pretzel rod in a bloody before, so a pro tip would be to eat that first before it dissolves in your drink!

We’d give Lynch’s another chance, but next time we would get there early and hope to endear ourselves to the regulars.

Milwaukee, WI: Who’s On Third

We told you we’re back! This week we also visited Who’s On Third in Milwaukee and sampled their Bloody Mary.

Spice & Mix: Although the mix was from a bottle (we aren’t sure which mix exactly), we were impressed by the bartender’s skills in crafting the drink to make it unque–and delicious. She added worcestershire, sriracha sauce and probably a few other things that we had to look up spellings for, as she doctored up the mix. We even watched her taste-test the drink (safely! No sips from the glass or straw, don’t worry) to make sure it was up to her standards.

Chaser: None offered.

Fixin’s: Bacon, Cheese and Beefstick

Price: $Unknown. We were here for a work event and were given a free drink ticket, so I’m not sure what they charge regularly.

This bloody mary was excellent and we would surely order another if we were to stop back in here again; however, this particular bartender seemed to take pride in her work and clearly had her own recipe, so I’m not sure the beverage would be replicated precisely if someone else were to craft it for us.

While it was delicious, we probably wouldn’t drive all the way down to Old World Third Street and fight the crowds and parking to get it, but kudos to the bartender at this establishment nonetheless! We are impressed. You go girl.

Milwaukee, WI: 9 Below

Recently, I had the chance to go to 9 Below, a min-golf tavern located 9-feet below ground on Milwaukee’s East Side.

Not only do you get to play mini-golf while enjoying drinks in a fun, bar-type setting, but you also get to design your own mini-golf course, using various obstacles and items to make each hole unique. You also get to name each hole and set a “par.”

While my colleagues and I enjoyed this fun, teambuilding exercise away from the office, I also enjoyed a Bloody Mary from the bar at 9 Below:

Spice & Mix: The mix was Major Peter’s and it was very tasty.

Chaser: None offered.

Fixin’s: My drink had four olives and a lemon and lime. I saw a couple other coworkers that scored a beef stick though!

Price: $Unknown. As this was a work event, we were given a free drink ticket, so I’m not sure what they charge regularly.

The verdict? While I would not come here especially for the Bloody Mary or to just drink at their bar (I don’t even know if you can), I would definitely recommend 9 Below as a fun place to host a very unique group outing. And while you’re there, if you order a bloody like I did, you won’t be disappointed. Enjoy!

Maryvale, AZ: Grand Canyon University Golf Course

We visited Grand Canyon University Golf Course in Maryvale, Arizona (a suburb of Phoenix); afterward, we stopped for a bite to eat and a Bloody Mary.

IMG_4698As you can see, this one had your basic lemon and lime in it and that’s about it. It’s your average on-the-course drink and it hit the spot, but definitely not something to seek out in your travels!

Toronto, Ontario, Canada: Harlem Underground

We kicked off 2017 as we do each year–trying to find the Best Bloody Mary ever and if that’s not quite achievable, then at least the Bloody Mary of the year.

If you had asked us in January where we thought that Bloody Mary might be found, we would not have said Canada.

Yes, that’s right. We said it. The best Bloody Mary we’ve seen so far this year (and granted it’s only October so bars still have the chance to knock our socks off, but it’s gonna be a tall task!) came from a place called Harlem Underground in Toronto.

“Canada, eh?” you say?

You might balk at the $19.95 price tag, but this beverage dubbed The Bloody Jerk has your drink, your dinner and more included.

Spice & Mix: Decent flavor–made with worcestershire sauce, Jamaican jerk bitters, harlem hot sauce, horseradish & clamato

Chaser: None offered.

Fixin’s: Per the menu: mini fried chicken & waffles, candied plantain & a crunchy deep fried pickle; ours also had deep fried okra, a tomato and more!

Price: $19.95

Now truth be told, we weren’t a huge fan of the actual bloody itself… even though the menu says it has all of those spices in it, it didn’t taste that fresh–more like a standard bottled mix. However, that could have been because we were tired by the time we disassembled and ate our way through the garnishes!
Nonetheless, we were happy to try this gem. It’s been far too long since we’ve found an outrageous bucket list bloody!
Plus, we really liked the vibe of Harlem Undergound, which is inspired by the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s. The food is a mix of Afro-American and Afro-Caribbean and on the night we visited, there was lovely live jazz as well.
If you’re a Bloody Mary freak like we are–and if you’re reading this blog, we’re willing to wager you are–then make it a point to seek this one out if you’re ever in Canada!
