I couldn’t be more excited about these earrings from Charms of Wonderland that I found on Etsy! Can’t wait to wear them this weekend a I drink bloodies during the Big Game. Thanks to one of our Twitter followers who tipped me off to these lovely pieces of art!

January 1 is National Bloody Mary Day…no better way to ring in the New Year! Cheers!

On my first day in Sydney, I stopped in at a funky little place called Darlo Bar.

I asked if they had Bloodies and was pleased when the bartender said yes—and asked if I liked them spicy.

This was made with a homemade mix and Belvedere Vodka. It had a little kick to it, but it was a unique kick, not sure that it was Tobasco.

Fixin’s and chasers are literally foreign here, so none of that was to be expected; a stalk of celery and you’re good to go.

One other interesting tidbit is that the bartender inquired as to whether I would like “35ml of vodka or 50.” I am also quickly learning that drinks here do NOT come cheap.

Continuing my travels, I was facing a long 15-hour flight from LAX to Sydney on Virgin Australia when the flight attendant asked what I would like to drink.

Of course, I asked for a Bloody Mary. She asked me if tomato juice and vodka would be okay. That being my best option, I said yes.

So, I had the barest of Bloodies somewhere out over the ocean—not even any salt or pepper added—-and I have to say it really wasn’t that bad!

However, the fact that they didn’t even have any mix on board didn’t bode well for me in the land down under… stay tuned for more adventures!

I’m traveling in Arizona right now and I couldn’t resist getting a Bloody to review for the blog. Unfortunately, the one I picked wasn’t the best. It was from a cute little place in Scottsdale called Karsen’s Grill. The place is smaller than my living room, but the waitstaff is attentive and the clientele friendly (not uber-trendy like many other Scottsdale establishments). Unfortunately, I’ve been spoiled by the hearty Wisconsinite Bloodies as of late, so this one left me underwhelmed. Oh well, they can’t all be winners!

Spice:Not very.

Mix: Unknown.

Chaser: None.

Fixin’s: You get one slice of lime and you’ll like it!

Price: Unsure, but I would guess $5-6.

The Iron Horse Hotel

Yesterday,  I had a work meeting at the Iron Horse Hotel. Of course, I couldn’t leave without trying their Bloody Mary.

Overall, this was your standard simple bloody, but it had a great taste. Wouldn’t go out of my way to get there for the Bloody Mary, but I’d definitely go hang out at their bar (or their patio, which is amazing in the summer) and while there, I would order this drink. Cheers!

Spice:  I requested it to be spicy and it had the perfect amount of kick!

Mix: Unsure.

Chaser: None offered.

Fixin’s:  Lime, Lemon, Pickle, Olives, Celery

Price: $Unknown

Last night,my friend Carol hosted a neighborhood book club gathering. Carol is a fellow Bloody Mary lover and I was delighted to find that her husband had made Bloodies for the occasion.

Dave used Mr. and Mrs. T’s along with some of his special spices to mix the delicious drink. He added in lemon, a pickle, olives, celery and a beef stick. I was very impressed! The only drawback? Dave is better know for his home-brewing prowess; with mad skills like his, a chaser would have sent this drink soaring to the top of the homemade charts! 🙂

Earlier this week, I was in Orlando for business and went out to dinner at Oceanaire’s Seafood Room.

Of course, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to try out their bloody!

The drink arrived in a very tall, impressive glass as you can see. It also had one of my favorite fixin’s—shrimp.

Spice: Excellent flavor, Very smooth.(However, I will note that a coworker, upon seeing my Bloody, ordered his own with the request to make it spicy… it came back tasting like Worcestershire sauce. Not good!)

Mix: Unsure.

Chaser: None.

Fixin’s:  Lime, Olive and Shrimp!

Price: $Unknown

If you ever find yourself in a city with an Oceanaire’s, I encourage you to go. The food was excellent, their bloody was great and their service was top-notch.

Cheers!

Last night, I was fortunate enough to dine at Dream Dance Steak inside Potawatomi Bingo Casino.

While waiting for the party to arrive, I ordered their Bloody Mary at the bar. The bartender didn’t bat an eye at my after 5pm request. Instead, she smiled and said, “Do you like ‘em spicy?”

That’s when I knew I was in for not only a great Bloody, but a great night as well.

Unlike my last steakhouse Bloody, this one did not disappoint. It was the perfect to start to what ended up being one of the best meals I have enjoyed in a long time. If you ever have the opportunity to try Dream Dance Steak, I highly recommend it.

Our table ordered their famous Wisconsin Cheese Curd Fritters and we got adventurous and tried the Kangaroo (not as game-y as you’d expect, kind of like a sweeter steak). For my main course, I had the scallops, an excellent choice. Those who had steak were satisfied as well.

Besides their superb Bloody and top-notch fare, their wine list is also impressive.

Spice: Excellent flavor, like you’d expect from a steakhouse. Very smooth.

Mix: Unsure.

Chaser: None.

Fixin’s:  Lemon, Lime, Cucumber, Two Olives, a Mushroom, Mini Pickle, Onion

Price: $10

Stoney River Legendary Steaks, Duluth, GA

I just realized I never posted about my third Bloody Mary from my roadtrip over the holidays.

My third Bloody Mary was from Stoney River Legendary Steaks and it was my very last Bloody of 2012 since I had it there on New Year’s Eve.

It was going to be a wine night, but over dinner, the topic of this blog came up and my friend Trey said he would get a Bloody if I did. Of course, I’m always up for a Bloody and steakhouses typically have good ones, so I ordered one.

Unfortunately, it was just okay. Not bad, but not great, as you can see from the description below.

Spice: Not very spicy, but still flavorful.

Mix: Unsure.

Chaser: None.

Fixin’s:  Lemon, Celery stalk

Price: Unknown

Oh well, there are plenty more good bloodies to be had in 2013!

Cheers!
