Continuing on our Up North Bloody Mary pilgrimage, we stopped in at the Moccasin Bar in Hayward, Wisconsin. Right down the street from the Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame, the venue has the World’s Largest Muskie as well as a “wildlife” museum, comprised of taxidermy art.

You’ve got imbibing chipmunks, raccoon boxing matches and much, much more.

And, of course, a solid bloody mary.

Spice & Mix: The bartender told us that due to COVID-19, they couldn’t mix their own bloodies. We were perplexed by this but okay, whatever, I guess. He told us they use a Bloody Mary mix called Whitney’s. If you want to doctor it up, they’ll give you the jar of horseradish and the bottle of tabasco. [Shrug]

Fixin’s: Pickle, Olive and Beefstick

Chaser: Your choice

Price $7

If you’ve made it all the way to Hayward, you can’t NOT visit the Moccasin Bar. It’s worth the trip just to see the taxidermy art.

We had also dined at the restaurant when it was a previous establishment and we liked what Crafty Cow has done to update the decor.

However, overall, unfortunately we weren’t impressed by the Bloody Mary, the prices, or the service. For more bang for our buck and much better bloodies, especially on a Sunday during a Packers game, we’re heading to the other new burger joint in the neighborhood instead: Badger Burger Company.

On a recent trip “Up North” in Wisconsin, we stopped at SentryWorld Golf Course in Steven’s Point. It was late November and there was a light dusting of snow on the ground so we didn’t get to see the course’s signature landscaping, but we did get to check out their gem of a restaurant/bar called PJ’s SentryWorld Restaurant.

Spice & Mix: Your choice of Bakon vodka, Chippewa River dill or garlic vodka, or Absolut Peppar vodka with housemade mix

Fixin’s: Fresh cheese curds, bacon, pickle, olive, house-pickled mushroom, Brussels sprout

Chaser: Your choice! We chose PJ’s private label.

Price: $9… but we got $1 off because it was happy hour

We had also dined at the restaurant and we loved the vibe. It was a cozy, open, airy place with bright artwork and impeccable craftsmanship.

We ordered a burger and it was delicious. For a restaurant on a golf course, the prices were more than reasonable and the service was fantastic. Next time we visit, we hope to get out on the course and play, but we were super satisfied with our visit.

This weekend, we checked out one of Wauwatosa’s newer establishments, Crafty Cow.

Crafty Cow is a family owned bar and restaurant with three locations: Oconomowoc (2014), the Bayview neighborhood of Milwaukee (2016), and East Wauwatosa (2021). They specialize in craft burgers and chicken sandwiches, as well as craft beer and craft cocktails.

We were excited to try their “award-winning” Bloody Mary, but unfortunately came away less than impressed:

Spice & Mix: “Award-winning house recipe made with veggie-infused vodka”

Fixin’s: Lemon, Lime, Bacon, Cheese Curd and Pickle (Menu notes olive also but we didn’t get one.)

Chaser: None offered.

Price: $11.

For a place with such a great-looking food menu that prides itself on the craftsmanship of its craft cocktails, I have to say we were very disappointed with this Bloody Mary. The cheese curd was dumped in the Bloody, floating to the bottom on its own, not a toothpick in sight. There was also no chaser offered, which is weird since you’d think they would be pairing it with a craft beer… it just seemed thrown together, almost like they didn’t even care.

Yes, it was brunch time on a Sunday, but the restaurant wasn’t busy at all. In fact, I had to get up from the table to find our server at one point to request more silverware.

As far as food goes, we both had the avocado toast and it was a generous portion with a unique spin (roasted brussels sprouts) and we will say that it was very good and very filling.

Our travels took us to Hilton Head Island, where we visited Hudson’s Seafood House on the Docks not once but three times in our 5-day stay.

A beautiful (and COVID-19 approved) outdoor setting on the water in the warm October sunshine combined with fresh catch-of-the day seafood made for a restaurant our whole group could agree upon.

While Hudson’s offers many delicious cocktails, we had to sample the Bloody Mary. It’s what we do.

Spice & Mix: The restaurant was busy and we didn’t inquire specifically, but they definitely had an Old Bay rim.

Fixin’s: One lone lemon wedge.

Chaser: None offered.

Price: $Unsure, but probably about $9-11.

While this wasn’t really anything to write home about, the restaurant itself is a HHI institution, I am told (and so the story on the menu tells me). Bloody Marys always pair well with oysters (that’s why they have shooters!) so it was definitely worth a try. All the food we sampled here on our three visits was delicious and did not disappoint.

However, if you visit, I would suggest you try the frozen drinks instead if you’re dining outside on warm sunny day. They are delicious!

Skip the Bloody Mary at Hudson’s and go straight for the frozen cocktails!

It’s been quite awhile since we’ve traveled anywhere, much less by plane. But there’s something about an early morning flight that makes one crave a Bloody Mary and that hasn’t changed.

Thus, during our layover in Atlanta, we had to seek one out. We were unpleasantly surprised to find many of the dining options in our terminal at Atlanta’s Hartfield-Jackson International Airport closed or open with limited hours, but fortunately, we were able to grab a seat at the bar at LongHorn Steakhouse right when it opened.

While this was a standard bloody at best, somehow all bloodies at the airport just seem to hit the spot.

Spice & Mix: We didn’t have the chance to inquire, but we ordered ours spicy. There was a hint of an Asian-inspired spice that we couldn’t quite place. The bartender also talked us into making it a double (they use Helix Vodka).

Fixin’s: You get one olive and you’ll like it.

Chaser: None offered.

Price: $13.99 for a double

Of course, everything is also overpriced at the airport where they have you captive, but at this point in time, it was worth it. We also slept quite well on the second leg of our journey.

Moral of the story… if you’re looking for a Bloody at the ATL airport, you might have trouble finding one in the COVID-19 era, but in a pinch, LongHorn’s in Concourse C will do.

Badger Burger CompanyBadger Burger Company

On a recent Packers Sunday, a group of us checked out the relatively new Badger Burger Co. location in Brookfield, Wisconsin.

Although it has a rather strange location–a small strip mall in the parking lot of another strip mall–for a sports bar/fast-casual restaurant, it turned out to be a “hidden gem” as one of my dining companions dubbed it.

The restaurant has plenty of TVs and bar, booth and table seating with an upstairs and a private party room available, too. Of course they specialize in burgers (hence, the name),  but the menu boasts a wide array of offerings like chicken sandwiches, wraps, salads, specialty mac and cheeses and chicken wings. Plus, there are happy hour specials from 2-5pm each weekday as well as daily food and drink specials 7 days/week.

Fortunately for us, Sunday’s special (in addition to a large pizza deal) was $3 off Bloody Marys. Badger Burger Co. has four specialty Bloodies on the menu. Their house, which is chock-full of fixin’s; a Bacon Lover’s, which is the house plus bacon x3; a Shrimp Lover’s, which is the house plus shrimp x3; and the Badger, which adds two sliders!

Everyone in our crew ordered the house, save for one lone Bacon Lover. Here are the details.

Spice & Mix: They told us they have created their own and there is a large carafe of it behind the bar. It had a good, but familiar taste.

Fixin’s: Celery, pickle, 2 olives, shrimp, cheese and beef, bacon strip

Chaser: Your choice from the tap offerings

Price: $10 regularly, $7 on Sundays

The consensus is that the Bloodies were all very tasty. Loved the amount of fixin’s. We thought the price was a little on the high side at $10, but at $7, they were a bargain. We also saw someone else order the Badger, which retails for $13.50 and determined that you’d really get your bang for your buck if you ordered that on a Sunday… for $10.50, you’d have your drink and enough of a small snack to fill you up.

PLUS, the restaurant also offers $5 Bloody Mary refills with normal garnishes (see above photo), which is also a sweet deal.

The food was delicious and very filling. Three of us had to get to-go boxes! That’s why I think the Badger Bloody would be a good bet next time… just enough of a snack to qualify as an app or mini meal in addition to your beverage.

Badger Burger Co. also has an app where you can earn free Bloodies and Burgers (buy 9, get one free) and get access to other specials.

Oh and did I mention they do touchdown shots? Thanks to the Packers, we also got two shots while dining there for the first half of the game.

Definitely recommend you check out this new sports bar in the area. You’ll be pleasantly surprised. They also have locations in Mukwonago, Richfield and Oconomowoc.

On a recent trip up to Door County, we stopped at PC/DC, or PC Junction in Bailey’s Harbor, Wisconsin.

Spice & Mix: I believe they used Sacramento Mix, but don’t quote me on this.

Fixin’s: Celery and olives

Chaser: None offered

Price: $Unsure

While the staff here was overly nice, unfortunately, this Bloody Mary was very, very average. As you can see, it is your typical bloody with a few olives and a celery stalk. There was nothing overly memorable about it, good or bad.

If you’re seeking out Door County’s best bloody marys, check out some of our other reviews on this site, like this post.

There is a relatively new Mexican restaurant on Milwaukee’s south side in Franklin, Wisconsin called Agave Blu Cantina.

I’ve come here on Sundays to watch some Packers games and for Happy Hours a couple of times. There offer free chips and salsa and great drink specials. Of course I had to try their Bloody Mary.

Spice & Mix: Mary’s Hot Bottom Chili Pepper Flavored Vodka

Fixin’s: Celery, lime, olive and pickles

Chaser: None offered

Price: $5 (I believe this was the correct Happy Hour price)

This place seems to offer great food and drink specials almost every night of the week, but it has never been crowded when I’ve been there, which is a shame. I hope this place can succeed, so give it a shot the next time we’re allowed to dine in again.

Hello there. It’s us again. Still playing catch up.

Back in February, we stopped in at the Water Street Brewery in Delafield, Wisconsin after a nice hike through Lapham Peak. It was supposed to be a 5-mile snowshoe hike, but unseasonably warm weather made it more of a regular hike.

This happened to be Super Bowl Sunday, so after we got our nice workout in, we kicked off the pregame festivities a little early with brunch.

Now we had reviewed the Water Street Brewery’s regular Bloody Mary almost six years ago. And, as I’m SURE you’ll recall, we were highly disappointed that we weren’t aware of their specialty Bloody Mary.

Okay, so we had actually completely forgotten about that debacle and 2014 probably was the last time we were even out in Delafield; however, the weekend brunch menu highlighted the Oktoberfest Bloody Mary pretty heavily, so when we placed our food and drink order, we didn’t realize that it wasn’t clear… we were all in on the big kahuna.

The bartender saw the surprise and the fear in my eyes when we set down the plain Bloody Mary. Immediately, I inquired about the fixings. He apologized and didn’t charge me for the original drink, which he said I should enjoy while I waited for my smorgasbord.

It was well worth the wait.

Spice & Mix: Homemade Mix and Sky Vodka with Water Street Brewery’s Oktoberfest

Fixin’s: Shrimp, Brewton, Cheese Curds, Eggplant Fry, Bacon, Pickle, Olive, Celery, Lemon and Lime

Chaser: One of their local beers

Price: $12.00

There must not be too many people who order this drink since I’ve only been here twice and both times, no one tried to upsell me on this version or even clarify which one I was requesting. That’s a darn shame because it’s delicious–a meal in itself, indeed.

Come here for brunch and order this and something smaller and you’ll be happy the rest of the day. Just be sure to specify which Bloody Mary you’re ordering.

It’s been way too long since we’ve updated this blog and frankly, since we’ve had a Bloody Mary.

During this time of self-quarantine, we’ve caught up on all of the housework, Netflix shows and now, we’re finally getting around to adding in some reviews. We know, our priorities are a little messed up. But again, that’s probably since it’s been way too long since we’ve had a Bloody!

Anywho… let’s flashback all the way to Black Friday 2019, back when times were simpler and you were allowed to dine in at restaurants.

We stopped at the Grumpy Troll en route to Galena, Illinois where we planned to spend the weekend checking out wineries and getting a jump start on our holiday shopping.

Spice & Mix: Mary’s Hot Bottom Chili Pepper Flavored Vodka

Fixin’s: Celery, Beef stick, lemon, olive and pickles

Chaser: One of their local beers

Price: $6.50

We thoroughly enjoyed our Grumpy Mary at this award-winning brew pub, along with a satisfying lunch.

If you ever find yourself in the unique town of Mount Horeb, known for its trolls, you should definitely check out this restaurant!
