This week, I got an excellent surprise from “Santa” and the good folks at Sobelman’s, home one of my favorite Bloody Marys:

You can guess one place where I’ll be spending my time this holiday

Happy Holidays to you and yours!

CHEERS!

This past weekend,  was finishing up some holiday shopping at Bayshore Mall and decided to pop in to the new Sprecher Restaurant and Pub for lunch.

To my surprise (and delight), I realized their drink menu also featured a special Bloody Mary: The Bloody Boot.

Spice: Very spicy, taste-wise and the amount of pepper/spices floating in the drink itself.

Mix: Unknown

Chaser: No (VERY surprising considering Sprecher is a brewery afterall)

Fixin’s: Lemon, Lemon, Celery, Olive, Pickle Slice, Cheese Curd

Price: $8 for the 28-oz boot (which you get to keep, well, to boot!) which entitles you to $5 refills, or $5 for pints.

All in all, I was pleasantly surprised to find that Sprecher had a specialty Bloody Mary. I also very much liked the look and feel of the place and the menu is very “Sconnie” yet broad, so there is sure to be something for everyone. I highly recommend you check it out next time you’re over in the Bayshore area!

This past Sunday was the annual “Milwaukee Largest Bloody Mary” event at Great Lakes Distillery.

This was the fourth year for this event, and the fourth year for me attending it as well. Each year, there are more and more people attending, which is a great sign. This year was especially great as Great Lakes Distillery has added on a fantastic bar in the last year, adding more seating and ambiance to the venue.

For just $5 and a donation of food to Hunger Task Force, you get part of a 100 gallon Bloody Mary made with Rehorst Gin or Vodka and Jimmy Luv’s mix. It comes with  olives and Klement’s beef stick.

This year, a new bar/restaurant called Prodigal sold skewers of items that you could add to your Bloody for an extra donation. The skewer, pictured below, includes a pepperoncini, a cheese curd, a onion, a shrimp, pickle and baby corn.

Needless to say, the Bloodies were flowing and they were awesome!

In addition to the donations of food, all proceeds from the event benefit the Hunger Task Force of Milwaukee.

Previously, I’d only been to Landmark Lanes on Milwaukee’s East Side for the Tomato Romp; however, this past weekend, I found myself there for a Big Lebowski-themed holiday party.

The movie was playing on the screens, bowling ball petit fours decorated the tables and the White Russians were flowing… but first I had to get a Bloody Mary.

Fixin’s: Lemon, Lemon, Two Olives

This was a pretty spicy drink, but it was very good.

Following our outing to Spin Milwaukee, we headed to dinner at Potawatomi Bingo Casino’s Wild Earth Cucina, one of Milwaukee’s Top 30 restaurants.

With dinner, I ordered a Bloody Mary.

Spice: Average

Mix: Unknown

Chaser: No

Fixin’s: Lemon, Lemon, Two Olives

The drink was good, but not as good as dinner. I had the Strauss Veal Picatta and it was amazing, as were several of the appetizers we shared.

‘Tis the season for holiday parties and libations!

The first soiree of the season was with my department at work. We started the night with a fun, spirited ping pong tournament at Spin Milwaukee.

I kicked off the night with a pretty average bloody (but hey, it was better than my ping pong prowess!):

Spice: Average

Mix: Unknown

Chaser: No

Fixin’s: Lemon, Lemon, Two Olives, Pickle

Price: $?

After that, I switched to Old Fashioneds, which, I must say, were much better.

If you ever have the chance to check out Spin, you should. A very cool place with a fun vibe.

Last Sunday, the Packers weren’t playing, but I headed to Boulder Junction to watch some of the other football games.

Surprisingly, I had never had their Bloody Mary, but I found it to be very tasty.

Spice: Perfect. The bartender spiced it up nicely upon request.

Mix: Major Peter’s (I had never had this, but it was very good)

Chaser: Yes

Fixin’s: Lemon, Lemon, Pickle, Three Olives

Price: $6

You already know I love Bloody Marys, but did you also know I love Black Friday shopping? It’s a tradition that dates back over 15 years with my best friend.

Over the past few years, Black Friday has leaked into Thanksgiving night and this year marked some of the earliest store opening times to date.

As such, we went out to one store shortly after the leftovers were stored and the pie was cut. We claimed our small victories and decided to head to a pub to celebrate and toast our friendship of over half our lives.

We ended up at Jackson’s Blue Ribbon Pub in Wauwatosa. Surprisingly, there was a lively crowd in there for the holiday.

Of course, I had to try their Bloody Mary.

Spice: Moderate

Mix: Unsure

Chaser: No

Fixin’s: Lemon, Lemon, 2 Olives, Pickle

Price: $?

This was a pretty standard Bloody Mary. I wouldn’t seek this out, but the bar is in a good location and I’ve been there for lunch before as well.

A few months ago, author Judy Bennett was kind enough to send me a copy of her book, Bloody Marys: Sanguine Solutions for a Slew of Situations.

This book, released in May 2011, intertwines humor, history, fun facts and recipes pertaining to our shared interest—the beloved Bloody Mary.

In her introduction, Bennett writes, “Why Bloody Marys? Come on. Anyone can pour wine into a glass and pronounce it ‘eviscerated’ or ‘petillant,’ but who else besides Mary can inspired a whole dossier?”

As if you needed an excuse to enjoy this drink, Bennett’s book contains 45 different Bloody Mary recipes designed to fit any mood and situation.

There’s the “Remind me why I’m going skydiving tomorrow,” a recipe that’s equal parts gumption and liquid courage; the “We should go to Hawaii more often,” featuring ginger and Thai basil; and more.

For Wisconsin folk, there’s even the “Go Packers,” an Official Packers Bloody Mary Tailgate Recipe.

Each recipe is accompanied by Bennett’s wit and snark—use caution when drinking a Bloody while reading this book… snorting out Bloody Marys, in particular ones that contain hot sauce, pepper and/or horseradish, could really hurt.

For a garnish, Bennett throws in some gems such as 6 women who have been nicknamed Bloody Mary throughout history; variations of the Bloody Mary containing different ingredients than your typical tomato juice and vodka combo (i.e. the “Bloody Fairy”—tomato juice and absinthe!); and more.

If you’re a fan of the Bloody (and I assume you are since you’re reading this blog), you’ll want to make sure to devour this book.

Thanks again to Judy for sending it my way—CHEERS!

Durty Nelly’s

While in Boston, I had the chance to check out the Freedom Trail early one morning. As I used my phone’s map system to guide me from site to site and as I was taking photos and “checking in” at each locale, my battery was draining quickly. I was also working up a thirst.

I was on the lookout for a place where I could “recharge,” literally and figuratively, when I crossed a street and stumbled on Durty Nelly’s.

From the outside, it looked like it might be one of those old-school fun Boston Irish Pubs you see on TV and in the movies, so I decided to check it out.

It got even better when the sandwich board outside the bar noted that they had great Bloody Marys, so I went inside, ordered one, plugged my phone in, and took a seat.

I was the only person in the place and as Scott, the bartender, mixed my drink, we got to chatting. Durty Nelly’s makes their mix from scratch and the recipe varies by bartender on staff.

Scott was proud of his mix, which had a dash of hot sauce, horseradish, other spices and his secret ingredient—mustard.

I don’t know if it was because I had worked up such a hunger/thirst with my long walk, or what, but I would say this was the best Bloody Mary I had in Boston.

Spice: Perfect.

Mix: Scott’s recipe.

Chaser: No

Fixin’s: Lemon, Lemon

Price: $8.50

Since I was hanging out long enough to charge my phone, I talked with Scott longer and ended up telling him about the Bloody Mary blog. He seemed pretty excited as he seemed like a fellow Bloody fan.

I showed him a photo of the Sobelman’s Bloody Mary and explained how we serve ‘em up in the Midwest. He was shocked. I suggested he try serving something crazy like that at Durty’s and he seemed interested in the idea. Scott, if you do, when you double your business, remember where it came from!
