Yesterday, I went to happy hour with a friend at Firefly Urban Bar & Grill in Wauwatosa.

For some reason, I never really think of Firefly when there are so many other restaurant choices in the Wauwatosa Village and East Tosa, but today, we decided to give it a go.

Firefly has an awesome bar. It’s really large and very swank. And, as I discovered, they also whip up a decent Bloody Mary.

Firefly Bloody Mary

Mix: Homemade

Chaser:No

Fixin’s: Pickle, Lemon, Lime, Cherry Tomato, Olive and Bacon

Price: $?

This isn’t my favorite Bloody Mary in the Village and I wouldn’t go here specifically for the Bloody  (Cafe Hollander has that badge), but when I come back, I will likely order this again.

After dinner and drinks at the Hubbard Park Lodge, we decided to check out Camp Bar, also in Shorewood.

Camp Bar is a unique place with a lodge/”up north” type atmosphere. It was recently announced that Camp Bar is opening a second location in Wauwatosa, so I wanted to check it out in advance of it coming to my ‘hood.

…And I’m pleased to report that East Tosa is getting another great Bloody Mary to join the ranks of Juniper 61, Red Dot and the like.

Mix: Homemade

Chaser: Yes–a Rhinelander Shorty!

Fixin’s: Cheese, pickle, asparagus, olive, beefstick, pepperoni

Price: $Unknown

I am told that Camp Bar also features a 22oz Bloody Mary for $8 on Sunday (or mini- Marys for $6.50, but where’s the fun in that?). I can definitely see this becoming a great spot to watch the Packers games this fall. I can’t wait until August.
Cheers!

I recently wrote about the newest member of the Lowlands Group, Cafe Bavaria in Wauwatosa.

Since this German gastropub has a wide selection of Bloodies, I knew I had some work to do. During my previous visit, I had ordered the “Dusseldorf” and my dad ordered the “Haus”. This time, I tried the special, a Bloody made with sage-infused vodka, while my dining companion was a bit more adventurous, trying the jalapeno “Wurzig” Bloody.

Here’s my write-up on the special:

Mix: Homemade, with different vodkas/spices depending on which beverage you order. This one had sage-infused vodka.

Chaser: Yes

Fixin’s: Varies, depending on the variety you order; this special had bacon, lemon, lime, olive, Brussels sprout, pickle, cheese and a piece of sausage.

Price: $7-$9

As previously mentioned, like its sister restaurants, Cafe Bavaria takes its Bloody Mary offerings seriously.  Delicious, I will be back again (and again!).

And, as a teaser, my aforementioned dining companion? She is also a Bloody Mary aficionado! I met with Susan Fiebig, author of “The Bloody Trail,” a book about her search for Wisconsin’s best Bloody Marys. After hearing about her book, I just knew I had to meet a fellow Bloody Mary lover from the area–over Bloodies of course!

Look for my review on her book to come.

Cheers!

I visited the famous steak/chops/seafood establishment Eddie Martini’s in celebration of my birthday last week. This was not my first time at the restaurant, but it was my first time trying their Bloody Mary.

Chaser: Yes

Fixin’s:  Lemon, lime, asparagus

Steakhouses usually have very tasty Bloody Marys and Eddie Martini’s was no exception. This Bloody was very good-and very strong. I would not come here specifically for the Bloody Mary, but if you happen to dine here and you’re in the mood, you won’t be disappointed. The service and food here is top notch.

I recently visited Cafe Bavaria, them newest member of the Lowlands Group, in Wauwatosa.

Although this is a highly authentic German gastropub, they had a nice variety of Bloody Marys (ala Hollander, Benelux, etc.).

I ordered the “Dusseldorf” and my dad ordered the “Haus”:

Chaser: Yes

Fixin’s: Varies, depending on the variety you order; there could be a brussel sprout, pickle, olives, sausage, etc.

Price: $7-$9

Like its sister restaurants, Cafe Bavaria takes its Bloody Mary offerings seriously. They are well-thought out and delicious. I would definitely return here just to try the other varieties or get a Bloody on a random day. Kudos to you, Lowlands Group! Another gem of an establishment and more great Bloodies–right in my neighborhood!

Last Friday, I visited Cafe Hollander in Wauwatosa again.

This time, I had the Frenchie and the Traditional. You can read my original Cafe Hollander post here

imageI can’t believe I haven’t formally reviewed the Bloody Marys at Cafe Hollander yet.

Cafe Hollander has two locations in the Milwaukee area— one on the East Side and one in Wauwatosa.

It is part of the Lowlands Grand Cafes, which include: Cafe Benelux, Trocadero, and Cafe Centraal.

I frequent each of these establishments quite regularly, with Cafe Hollander being closest to home. No surprise as each of these hot spots boasts an impressive and tasty variety of Bloodies.

On my most recent trip to Hollander for brunch with friends last weekend, I was “talked into” trying the special Bloody Mary of the day, what they called the Provincial (top photo), made with scallions, capers and garlic and garnished with a pickle, bean, asparagus, cherry tomato and an olive.

Other standard options at Cafe Hollander include: the Milwaukeean, Hasta Manana, and Frenchie.

My personal favorite is the Milwaukeean, which uses Milwaukee’s own Rehorst vodka and is served with horseradish, cheese and bacon.

Mix: Made from scratch

Chaser: Yes

Fixin’s: Varies by type

Price: Average price is $8

I definitely recommend you to stop into Hollander or any of the other Lowlands Group properties for  Bloody Mary (and great food!)—you won’t be disappointed!

I recently dined at the new Red Dot in Wauwatosa.

Formerly Sherbrooke, I had enjoyed Bloodies in this establishment in the past.

Under the same ownership, much of the menu is similar (yep-they still have poutine!); however, it looks like they’ve added some new Bloodies to their list—always a great improvement. I last reviewed the Garlic Basil Bloody, so I decided to try the “Rabbit’s Revenge” this time.

Made with home-infused carrot & ginger vodka with a touch of garlic-infused honey, this was definitely an interesting drink.

Spice: A mix of sweet and spicy.

Mix: Unknown; I have learned that I do enjoy house-infused vodka though!

Chaser: Yes

Fixin’s: Pickle, Olive, Meat and Cheese

Price: $8

I love this little restaurant and am so happy to see Tosa hustling and bustling with all of the new additions. I hope Red Dot sticks around for a long time!

Instead of heading to the Tomato Romp, I decided to check out a new addition to the Chilin’ on the Avenue in Tosa event-the “Bloody Mary Throw Down.” Stay tuned for a review!

Sherbrooke

Earlier, I wrote about my first experience at Colonel Hart’s. Another Wauwatosa bar I had never made it into was Shepherd’s and, unfortunately (or fortunately, who knows), I never will. That’s because this bar on North Avenue has recently re-opened as Sherbrooke, a bar/restaurant with a French Canadian flair.

While their food choices were plentiful and unique (poutine!), I was also happy to see they had a choice of Bloody Marys on the menu:

I tried the Garlic Basil Bloody on my first visit because I thought it sounded the most unique and I was also enjoying dinner at the time.

Spice: Definitely garlicky!

Mix: Unknown; I have learned that I do enjoy house-infused vodka though!

Chaser: Yes

Fixin’s: Pickle, Olives, Lemon & Lime

Price: $8

I went into Sherbrooke with extremely low expectations (I had avoided Shepherd’s so long for a reason—I didn’t let myself believe Sherbrooke would make a drastic improvement), but they were exceeded. Surprisingly good fare for a place most people will still likely consider a bar.

I’ll definitely be back and hope to try their brunch—and another Bloody—on a weekend.
