Charcoal Grill Bloody Mary

On Thursday, I had off from work and ended up at the Charcoal Grill in New Berlin for lunch with my parents. It was a dreary, rainy/snowy day so I decided to spice it up with a Bloody.

The Charcoal Grill Bloody Mary was very basic—down and dirty vodka/mix, olives, lemon lime and pickle. No fuss, no muss, no flair.

There was nothing bad about this bloody, it just didn’t have a unique twist; however, the price was very reasonable.

Spice: Not very spicy, but still flavorful.

Mix: Unsure.

Chaser: None.

Fixin’s:   Lemon, Lime, olives, pickle.

Price: $5.75

Another Christmas gift has arrived! This time from my boss (and friend), Kathy:

Skyy Vodka & Mr. & Mrs. T’s Bloody Mary Mix! She also included a 365-Day Cocktail Book, which, appropriately, has a recipe for a Bloody Mary on January 1 (best way to start out your year!)b

I have never tried Mr. & Mrs. T’s (a classic, I know), so I’m excited to review that for you in the near future.

Looks like I’ll be making a lot of Bloodies at home in 2013 and that’s quite alright by me!

Joey Gerard’s, Greendale, Wisconsin

Last night, I went to the new Bartolotta’s Supper Club, Joey Gerard’s, with friends (there are two: one in Mequon, one in Greendale—I visited the Greendale location).

When you hear the words “Supper Club,” you automatically think of the 1950s-60s…a time when men like Tom Collins, Harvey Wallbanger and Rob Roy ruled the bar, relish trays were a thing and ice cream drinks capped off a dinner of hearty, beef-y comfort food like stroganoff and wellington. Hmm. Last time I checked it was 2012 (for another week or so at least).

But when you hear Bartolotta’s, you think classy, upscale, and above-all-else, delicious fare. So you give it the benefit of the doubt, throw on your pearls, and make a reservation.

And as usual, Bartolotta’s did not disappoint. In fact, Joey Gerard’s is just the place the Milwaukee-area needs. Supper Clubs were the norm in Wisconsin back in the day and now you’re hard-pressed to find one outside of northern destinations like Door County. We need a place that reminds us of a simpler time—with a modern twist.

Now, I know this is a Bloody Mary blog, but I’m getting to that so bear with me.

To me, a Supper Club seemed like just the place where they’d have a good Bloody. I had no concrete evidence on this, just a gut feeling based on past history with steakhouses, which usually make a mean, flavorful one. I figured this was similar and ordered one with dinner—even thought it wasn’t on the menu.

I was also encouraged by the “Bloody Mary Shrimp Cocktail” listed on the appetizers, so I of course had to order that too!

Now again, I was expecting a decent bloody, but nothing at all like what arrived!

Spice: Not very spicy, but still flavorful.

Mix: Unsure.

Chaser: None.

Fixin’s:   Lemon, Lime, cheese, olives, pickle, pearl onion, Brussels sprout,  beef stick, pepperoncini, mushroom, asparagus and a bean.

Price: $7

This was an excellent drink and immediately cracked my Top 10. I was so tempted to order a second one, but knew I wouldn’t be able to eat all of the garnishes and still put a dent in my meal.

Speaking of the meal…

Yes, the Bloody Mary Shrimp Cocktail (pictured above) was a must. It was very good, but not that special—it was pretty much a shrimp cocktail with okra, a brussels sprout, a pearl onion and a mushroom stuck in the sauce (which was quite spicy). I recommend it if you’re in the mood for shrimp cocktail—but not if you’re looking for that Bloody Mary fix!

We also got an order of raw beef and onions. I know, I know, that freaks many people out, but again, it was a throwback reminding me of Christmas Eves past. Food has the effect on people—triggering memories and emotions!

For dinner, I ordered the French Dip sandwich, while the rest of my party ordered steaks; everyone else also ordered dessert (including a couple of ice cream drinks!) but I was too full to partake.

I will definitely be returning to Joey Gerard’s and I suggest you check it out.

Cheers!

Sobelman’s… PART DEUX.

Yes, I just visited Sobelman’s back in October….but a lot has transpired since then!

Dave Sobelman decided about a month ago to add a slider to the garnishes on the Bloody  along with a chilled shrimp, celery, bacon, sausage and various pickled vegetables.

It was written up in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel….and Huffington Post. If that wasn’t enough, there was a segment on Good Morning America and attention even came from overseas as the Daily Mail, a British tabloid wrote about it.

People were buzzing about Sobelman’s Bloody—and my phone was buzzing as well as friends, family, coworkers and blog followers asked, “Have you tried Sobleman’s Bloody?”

Yes, I told them…but not this one. Of course, that meant I had to check them out again and give them another review!  So, I met my friend Kathryn there tonight for a post-work drink—which practically ended up being dinner as the my cup runneth over with garnishes!

Spice: Not very spicy, but still flavorful.

Mix: Tonight, I was told they use Jimmy Luv’s

Chaser: Miller Lite

Fixin’s:   Lemon, cheese, olive, pickle, pearl onion, brussels sprout,  beef stick, cherry tomato, onion, celery, mushroom, asparagus, a shrimp….and a full-on mini slider, complete with bacon & cheese. (I actually even ended up putting condiments (ketchup and mustard on it!)

Price: $9

The verdict? Well done, Sobelman’s! You didn’t need the burger to be good in my book, but now you’re one of my faves.

For other burger bloodies, check out my review of AJ Bomber’s.

The Ultimate Bloody Louie—Bar Louie’s Bloody Mary.

Yesterday, I was working on finishing up my holiday shopping at Bayshore Mall and decided to pop into Bar Louie for a little lunch; of course, I had to get their bloody to review it for the blog!

I’ve had it before, so I knew it was good—and gigantic!

Spice: The menu describes it as “a little spicy, a little tangy and a whole lot of flavor.” I would concur.

Mix: Unsure, but likely homemade. The bloody also is made with Absolut Peppar, Guinness Stout and Tobasco.

Chaser: None provided, but the bloody itself contains Guinness Stout.

Fixin’s: lemon, lime, two olives, pickle, celery stick, salami and a piece of provolone cheese

Price: Approximately $10

Today, I received an awesome Christmas gift from my friends the Kapczynskis—Hair of the Dawg Bloody Mary Mix and pickled asparagus and bleu cheese olives from West Allis Cheese & Sausage Shoppe. Obviously, they know me well!

I have not had any of these items before and I’m so excited to try them!

Expect a review in the near future. Thanks, Nancy, Gordy and Amanda!

Cheers!

Congrats to Sobelman’s!

Sobelman’s Bloody Mary has been getting lots of great, well-deserved national attention!

Unfortunately, when I visited the restaurant to review it in October, it was pre-burger addition. Sobelman’s is definitely on my list to re-review in the near future!

Congrats to Sobelman’s!

Bluephies Restaurant & Vodkatorium in Madison, Wisconsin

After reading about the Top 15 Over the Top Bloody Marys from Eater.com, I was excited to see that three of the 15 were from Wisconsin (represent!); I had already been to two (AJ Bombers and Sobelman’s) and I made it a point to check out Bluephies the next time I was in Madison.

Then I remembered that, as luck would have it, I was traveling to Madison today for work. I convinced my coworker that we had to have dinner at Bluephies.

We arrived and were presented with two menus—the drink menu was larger than the food menu—and a long list of specials from our waitress. I immediately inquired about the bloodies. They have four different kinds, including a Bloody Mary flight which allows you to sample three of the four.

I chose the one with the most fixin’s, which also seemed to be their signature drink: The FAT BOY Bloody Mary (you’ll see why, read on).

Spice: Not very.

Mix: They use spiced tomato juice and typically include a bacon-infused vodka.

Chaser: None offered.

Fixin’s:  celery, jalapeno stuffed olives, cocktail onions, pickled asparagus,
pickled mushrooms, a strip of bacon, and string cheese

Price: 8.75

After dinner, back in the car, I told my coworker that I wasn’t sure that Bluephies deserved to be on the top 15 list. And then I remembered that I had had to order it sans alcohol since we were on our way to our work function. That will usually make a big difference in the rating, especially since this one is typically made with bacon-infused vodka. Oh well, there will be more trips to Madison to find out! Had I been in it for the long haul,I likely would have ordered the flight to review here. On the other hand, the restaurant was odd—it had a very family-dining atmosphere, not at all what you’d expect from a place with the word “Vodkatorium” in its name (but maybe that’s because we got there at 5pm for the earlybird special). The food was also all over the board—everything from burgers and noodle bowls to meatloaf and enchiladas. I wouldn’t probably go out of my way to return, but if I ever find myself in the area, I just might give the bloody another go.

Cheers!

Matty’s Bar, New Berlin, WI.

Today was a very special day. Today marked the first time ever that my dad had played golf in all 12 months of a calendar year (a big feat in Wisconsin)! Yes, as Molly was enjoying her Bloody at Wilde in Chicago, dad  and I hit the links at Morningstar Golf Club just after 12p.m. this afternoon.

We both played pretty well, so we decided to hit one of my favorite Bloody Mary spots, Matty’s Bar, to celebrate and of course, add to the blog.

Brian introduced me to Matty’s sometime last year; it is near his office out in New Berlin. I promptly fell in love with the huge, fixin’-filled Matty Mary and look for any excuse to go to this place which is usually pretty far out of my way.

Spice: The bloody itself is not very spicy, but it is very, very good. The salt around the rim is mixed with a barbeque-like seasoning, which reminds me of Kruncher’s BBQ potato chips (in a good way).

Mix: Matty’s makes its own mix from what I understand, and uses their own vegetable-infused vodka. Another one of my favorite bloodies is also made with veggie-infused alcohol (Juniper 61 in Wauwatosa)….maybe that’s a secret to success?

Chaser: A mini stein of Miller Lite.

Fixin’s:  A mini-beef stick, pickle, asparagus, Brussels sprout, two olives, pepperoncini, pearl onion, cherry tomato, celery stick and string cheese.

Price: $8.50
