The following is a guest blog post from Sam Parador, a fellow Bloody Mary aficionado who attended Santa Monica’s Bloody Mary Battle over the weekend.
Santa Monica, California, is known for its beautiful blue skies, ocean views, the ferris wheel on the pier, and lazy days laying on the beach. But, now there is a new activity to add to the list when you visit: drink some Bloody Marys!

Last Sunday, five neighboring restaurants located on the picturesque Ocean Ave. set out to compete for the title of
“Best Bloody Mary.” Hosted by Del Frisco’s Grille, and sponsored by Tito’s Vodka and Bloody Gerry, each restaurant sent their best bartender to throw down their most delicious, and creative take on this traditional cocktail.
The competitors were Joseph Matlock from Locado Del Lago, Christiana Gifford from Blue Plate Taco, Danny Matlock from The Lobster, Steve Triosi from Del Frisco’s Grille and Adam George from Areal Restaurant.
“It’s about bringing the community together more then an actual competition,” said Adam of Areal Restaurant “It’s also about bragging rights.”

The winner of the throw down would receive a cash prize which they would get to decided which charity to donate it to.

“Drinking Bloody’s and raising money for charity? It doesn’t get any better then this!” said the emcee of the event Tyler Herdklotz.

Cheers!

The gameplay was simple. Purchase a ticket for $25 and receive a flight of five bloodies from each bartender’s personal mix set on top of a coaster listed A through E. Simply drop the coasters of your top three bloodies into the first, second, or third place boxes. The votes were then later counted and a victor would be announced. With over 300  Angelenos in attendance this throw down was an amazing spectacle to be seen– and tasted.
Of course it’s not always just about the mix is it? On display were some of the most impressive garnishes to be placed on top of a bloody mary cocktail. Joseph  Matlock of Lago had served his with a deep fried sardine, when the crowd shouted, “Who’s going to eat the head?”  Guest judge Jeff Miller of the thrilllist.com stepped up to the plate and bit the head right off. “How does it taste?” asked emcee Tyler. “Salty and delicious” was Jeff’s response.

The next most favored garnish was a slider served up by Steve Triosi from Del Frisco’s. “Now that’s a meal in a glass!” exclaimed guest judge, celebrity DJ Casey Conner. Another crowd-pleaser was Adam’s of Areal restaurant which served a refreshing garnish of heirloom tomato and mozzarella cheese to complement his freshly juiced heirloom tomato mix.

When the voting boxes were closed there was much discussion as to who the winner was going to be. “E is the winner for me,” said Gerry Becerril president and founder of Bloody Gerry, a premium tomato mix company. “I don’t know which bartender is E, but it is my kind of palette. Bold pepper flavor, the right amount of worcestershire, and the right blend of horseradish.”

The bartenders eagerly talked with each other discussing who they thought was going to take the bragging rights and the check. Christiana of Blue Plate Taco felt confident, “I know our blend with the roasted peppers, spices and flavors is a bloody mix that’s hard to compete against.”

When the time came to announce the winners the bartenders lined up, and the crowd starting chanting out their favorite restaurant to win. The winner of the day turned out to be Joseph Matlock from Lago, who received a combined check for a little over $3000 for his charity of choosing. Second place went to Steve Triosi from Del
Frisco’s Grille, who received a gift basket of Bloody Gerry and Tito’s vodka, “I can’t believe I got beat in my own house!” laughed Steve. Third place went to Adam of Areal.

So, if you find yourself in Santa Monica this summer, be sure to head to Locado Del Lago, and taste this summer’s winning Bloody Mary.

Recently, we checked out the new Pizza Man in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin. We never had the chance to visit Pizza Man on Milwaukee’s East Side, pre- or post fire, so we were excited to finally see what all the fuss was about.

Indeed, the pizza lived up to the hype. So many to choose from, our party ended up ordering two pies, split half and half, so we could try four of the varieties. They were all delicious.

The wine, beer and cocktail list at Pizza Man is equally impressive. Of course, we had to try their Bloody Mary:

Pizza Man Bloody Mary

MIX:  Homemade Mix

CHASER: Rhinelander Shortie

FIXIN’S: Salami, Cheese, Cherry Tomato, Olive and Lemon

PRICE: $?

The Pizza Man Bloody Mary was delicious. The mix itself had a thick consistency and the fixin’s were appropriate for the venue. We’d definitely order this Bloody Mary next time we come back and we’ll definitely be back many times since there is so much more pizza to be had!

By FAR our favorite spot on our most recent trip was to Snooze in Denver.

From their website: “Founded by brothers Jon and Adam Schlegel, Snooze was born on April 2, 2006 in Denver, Colorado seeking to evolve the A.M. dining experience through culinary innovation, an eclectic and energetic atmosphere and comfortable and friendly service.”

While Snooze was news to me, I found out that have locations in Colorado, California and Arizona… and I’m incredibly jealous we don’t yet have one in Wisconsin.

Snooze has a Bloody Mary menu consisting of five unique bloodies:

Snooze Bloody Mary

On this trip, I was able to sample two. Had I the time, I would have stayed there and tried them all.

First up: The Gazpacho.

Gazpacho Bloody Mary Snooze

MIX:  Pepper & Garlic Infused MEII Vodka w/house mix

CHASER: none

FIXIN’S: Pickle, lemon, cherry tomato

PRICE: $7.25

Next: The Pickled Green Tomato

Pickled Green Tomato Bloody Mary Snooze

MIX:  Vodka, fresh green tomato juice, jalapeno, cucumber, horseradish, dill and house pickle juice

CHASER: none

FIXIN’S: Pickle, cherry tomato, lemon

PRICE: $7.25

Both of these bloodies were AMAZING. They were so flavorful and unique. I highly recommend them both and I can’t pick my favorite between the two.

On top of the fantastic beverage service, the food here was out of this world. I had a pancake flight… yes, three different pancakes… consisting of Blueberry Streusel, Sweet Potato and Peanut Butter Cup.

Snooze Pancake Flight

This place is simply a must if you are ever in the vicinity… in this case, if you don’t Snooze, you lose! I will be back!

Our next stop was to Denver, Colorado, which brought us the chance to try another airport Bloody Mary. This time from Rock Bottom Brewery.

Rock Bottom Brewery Bloody mary

MIX: Unsure, but we did see the bartender add some spices on her own

CHASER: None offered

FIXIN’S: Celery, lime, lime, olive

PRICE: $8.49

This Bloody Mary was decent, but pretty standard. Basically, what you would expect from a chain.

On our way out of Kansas City, we stopped at Pork and Pickle in the airport.

There, we tried their “Hangar One Mary.”

MIX:  Hangar One Vodka & Spicy Bloody Mary Mix

CHASER: NONE

FIXIN’S: Olive, lemon, lime

PRICE: $13.49

This definitely fell way below expectations as far as airport bloody marys go. For one, the taste wasn’t anything special. It was also missing half of the promised fixin’s…and it rang up at a whopping $13.49.

Thankfully, our food was decent. Next time, we’ll stick with coffee at breakfast.

When you travel to certain places, there’s often a particular food or restaurant you “have” to go to. In Kansas City, they are very particular about their barbecue.

There were many places recommended to us, but we checked out Jack Stack and we were not disappointed:

jack's stack

In addition to the delicious sandwich of “burnt ends” (more on that to come) topped with coleslaw and a side of cheesy corn, they also had a special bloody mary on the menu: Jack’s Smokin’ Mary.

Jack's Stack BBQ

jack's stack bloody maryWe enjoyed this beverage so much that we ordered a second one. What really made this Bloody special, other than the thick, sweet BBQ-sauce flavor, were the burnt-end stuffed olives.

A traditional part of KC BBQ, burnt ends are flavorful pieces of meat cut from the point half of a smoked brisket.

MIX:  House-made mix (sold by the bottle!) with UV Sriracha Chili Pepper Vodka

CHASER: None offered

FIXIN’S: Burnt-End Stuffed Olives, Bacon Salt Rim

PRICE: $8

It’s no wonder the Jack Stack mix is sold by the bottle–it’s delicious. Well done, KC. You impressed us so far. We’re big fans.

We stopped for a bloody mary post-round at Evansville Golf Club.

Evansville Bloody Mary

MIX:  Homemade

CHASER: None offered

FIXIN’S: None

PRICE: $3.08

This was definitely a no-frills Bloody Mary, but it hit the spot after a long hot day on the course–and you can’t beat the price!

Kind of ironic that we had to drive to Appleton, Wisconsin to visit the Milwaukee Burger Company.

There are 3 locations for this local chain, yet none of them are actually in Milwaukee. You have to go to Appleton, Eau Claire, or now Franklin, which is the closest option to Milwaukee.

However, it is worth the drive for they have six different Bloody Marys on the menu.

Milwaukee Burger Company Bloody Mary

Of course, we had to try the 34-oz. Big Mil Bloody:

Milwaukee Burger Company Bloody Mary

MIX:  Bottle Mix (unsure of brnad) and Smirnoff

CHASER: The Milwaukee Burger Company locations have 30+ taps each. Choose from any!

FIXIN’S: Cheeseburger with bacon, celery, beef stick, cheese, olives, lemon, pickle

PRICE:  $9.99

This Bloody Mary was well worth the price. You got to sample a delicious burger from the restaurant known for its burgers, plus enjoy a HUGE bloody mary–one we admit we couldn’t even finish!

We’ll definitely be back to sample the other options over time, guaranteed.

While in Georgia, we were excited to pay a visit to Topgolf in Alpharetta.

For the unitiated, Topgolf is an entertainment complex centered around the sport of golf. It’s a driving range that’s tech’ed up so you can compete against friends and family to score points. Anyone from first-timers and kids can compete and have fun playing against regulars and pros.

You get a bay (a spot at the driving range) for your group and treat it like a bowling lane. You can organize your teams, or play individually, choosing from a variety of different games on the nearby computer. Sensors in the golf balls and targets help calculate your distance and score. You can bring your own clubs, or use those provided.

Plus, while you’re playing, you can order up food and beverages and they’ll be brought over to you for you to enjoy.

On our first time there, of course we had to try the “Perfect Bloody Mary.
Topgolf Bloody Mary

We also heard they had a Bloody Mary Bar earlier in the day on Sunday, but alas, we didn’t make it in time for that, so we ordered up one of the Perfect Bloody Marys:

Topgolf Bloody Mary

MIX:  Topgolf’s “Perfect Bloody Mary Mix” and Kettle One.

CHASER: None

FIXIN’S: Lime and 2 Olives

PRICE: $8

We liked the salted/flavored rim to the glass and the overall flavor of the Bloody Mary was very good.

In addition, all of the food we tried was delicious (and our large group tried a lot–chicken & waffle sliders, chili cheese fries, signature nachos, chips & guac, etc.).

After our Bloody Mary, we switched to their margarita and that gets two thumbs up as well.

Overall, we had a great time at Topgolf and can’t wait to get to another location very soon.

While in Atlanta, we dined at Seasons 52 in Buckhead.

We had sampled the Bloody Mary (or so we thought) at Seasons 52 while in Phoenix earlier this spring and found it to be rather pedestrian. However, this menu listing caught our eye:

Seasons 52 Bloody Mary Nectar

We definitely didn’t remember a “Bloody Mary Nectar” being offered, so we decided we had to try it.

Bloody Mary Nectar Seasons 52

MIX:  House mix, made with crushed tomatoes and sriracha–plus gin! (so technically, a red snapper?)

CHASER: None

FIXIN’S: Mint, sundried tomato

PRICE: $9.95

We were very glad we gave Seasons 52 a second chance. This one was excellent–very different, the perfect mixture of sweet and spicy and, of course, extremely fresh. We wish there was a Seasons 52 near us so we could have the Bloody Nectar more often. Be sure to give it a go if you find yourself in a Seasons 52!
