We recently visited the Emerald City for the first time ever, so we called up our friend the Drunken Tomato and asked her for her expert recommendations. We knew we were only here for a short stay and wanted to know where we HAD to go. If we could only have one Bloody Mary in Seattle, we asked, where should we go?

Sam’s Tavern is was.

We came here solely for the Bloody Mary, but could only make it around 11pm on a Saturday night. Yep, they were still serving it despite the large crowd and booming music. We were served fast and the bartender didn’t even blink an eye when we ordered it. (Most bartenders give you the “We’re out of mix” line at that time of night, even though you know they’re stocked up for Sunday Brunch.)

Fixin’s: Cheese, olive, cocktail weenie, cherry tomato, lime, pearl onion, celery, and a cheeseburger slider complete with lettuce, onion, tomato and sauce.

Price: $15

Sam’s Bacon Vodka Bloody Mary Masterpiece is not all for show. The mix itself has a nice smoky, spiciness and was very smooth. The salted rim is an added bonus.

We absolutely LOVED the garnish. The slider was reminiscent of a Big Mac or a Whopper and the cheese hunk was generous. Lots of snacking while sipping–a great combination!

On the recommendation of a friend who lives in the area, I recently checked out Piece Pizzeria & Brewery in Chicago. This cute & hip spot is located in the Wicker Park neighborhood and was hoppin’ even on a Wednesday night.

We grabbed a spot at the bar and ordered an app and a pizza. My friend had promised me a “Bloody Mary made with pizza sauce,” but alas, we found out they are no more. They have changed their recipe since he was there last; however, we still ordered a couple to test ’em out.

Spice: It had a little kick to it, especially the salt around the rim.

Mix: Homemade!

Chaser: None

Fixin’s: Lemon, Lime, Celery, Pepper, Cheese, Olive and a piece of Hot Doug’s sausage.

This Bloody Mary was very tasty. I especially enjoyed the garnish. The food here was delicious, too. A little sad I missed out on the pizza sauce version, however! Definitely recommend this place as a dining option when you’re in the area. Cheers!

Our State Fair is a great State Fair… From cream puffs and fried stuff on a stick to micro brews and beersicles, there is a ton of great food and drink to be enjoyed.

Each year, the vendors seems to try to one-up each other and themselves by creating the most outrageous concoctions.

This year, the Mountain Man Bloody Mary Burger from the Exotic Meats stand caught our attention.

The Mountain Man Burger, for the uninitiated, contains “5 Animals in 1 Patty!” Yes, that’s right, the patty was comprised of Antelope, Bison, Boar, Elk and Venison blended in a 1/3 lb. patty, seasoned like a bloody mary. The patty is topped with a special bloody mary sauce and celery salt, and served on a gourmet bun. It was then garnished with a skewer of celery, pickle, olive, bloody mary cheese curd, bloody mary meat stick and marinated mushroom.

So, we shelled out the $13 for this delicacy and gave it a try.

We have to admit, we were a little disappointed. While not too gamey-tasting (like I was expecting), the patty seemed small and quite dry. There was definitely more bun than meat. The best part about this was the garnish, but we would have rather had that on top of a real bloody mary, rather than this burger–especially for the price tag.

Sorry, guys. We really wanted to like it! Next time, you’ll find us sampling a drink instead.

 

 

 

 

 

 

We recently visited Point Burger Bar in Milwaukee, Wisconsin for Happy Hour.

Point Burger Bar combines top-notch burgers along with beer from Steven’s Point Brewery (hence the name).

The restaurant is headed up by local restaurateur Brian Ward, owner of Ward’s House of Prime and was inspired by burger bars in Las Vegas.

A licensing agreement with Stevens Point Brewery, a Wisconsin brewery with a history that dates back to 1857, lends both their name and their beer to the fast casual dining spot.

The bar features 30 taps, 25 of which are Point products, along with over 60 bottled brews and a full selection of spirits; it also has a great Happy Hour.

On a separate occasion we dined here for lunch and built our own burgers, but the next time we knew we had to try out the drinks, so we came for the Happy Hour.

Although the bloodies weren’t on the special, you know we just had to test drive ’em anyway. For you, of course.

Fixin’s: Bacon, Olive, Cheese, Pickle

Price: $11

While Point Burger Bar gets “points” for using our favorite mix, the chaser, cheese and bacon, it gets docked for the hefty price tag, in our opinion. We knew the bloodies weren’t on the Happy Hour special, but we didn’t expect to pay $11 a pop. That’s a problem when they’re so good you order two and get saddled with a $22 bill when you didn’t even eat real food!

We’d suggest knocking the price back to a more reasonable $7 or $8, which seems more on par with similar bloodies in the marketplace. Or, hey, you’re a Burger Bar. We’d gladly pay the $11 if you slapped on a slider or two, like Milwaukee Burger Co., AJ Bombers or Sobleman’s before you.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Recently we found ourselves in San Diego, home of many great bloodies that we’ve previously reviewed. On this particular trip, we revisited two of our favorites: Cafe 21 (where we weren’t able to imbibe, but enjoyed our breakfast) as well as the Bier Garden of Encinitas (where we tried a different one of their Bloody options, review updated).

Other than that, we really didn’t have much time to seek out anywhere new, but we did have some time to kill at the airport on our way home. That’s when we stopped at Banker’s Hill Restaurant and Bar in our terminal.

While the actual restaurant itself looks cool, the watered-down airport version was crowded and left much to be desired, particularly when it came to the average-at-best bloody mary:

We barely sipped half of the drink and boarded our flight home with a somewhat spicy but non-memorable taste in our mouths.

Next time, we’ll stick with our known entities, purposely seek out some more great Bloody places, and/ or give the actual Banker’s Hill restaurant itself a do-over.
