Dantanna’s Bloody Mary Bar, Atlanta, GA

While in Atlanta, another Bloody Mary that I tried came from Dantanna’s, an “upscale sports restaurant.” I was there on a Sunday late morning/early afternoon to watch the football games and I was very excited to see that they had a lavish Bloody Mary bar set up when I walked in.

There were multiple kinds of mixes, many different spices and fixin’s like pickles, olives, peppers and celery. Another feature that I enjoyed was the lime juice to dip the rim of your glass in and the sea salt to roll it in.

I used this NFL Sunday opportunity to try two mixes that were new to me:  Whiskey Willy’s and Clamato.

For my first drink, I used Whiskey Willy’s and was conservative on the spices. I think I only added celery salt, a celery stalk, a pickle and olives.

From Willy’s website:”Whiskey Willy’s Bloody Mary mix is an all-natural and gluten-free drink mixer that was actually designed and created by a bartender. This amazing blend of Grade-A tomato paste, California garlic, domestic lemon juice, and other special ingredients is low in calories and sugar, but high on taste! There are no artificial flavors in our Bloody Mary mix; so enjoy it as both a summer snack and a holiday treat.”

It was good, but a pretty standard bloody.

For my second drink, I got a little more bold and went for the Clamato mixed with Old Bay seasoning and the lime/salted rim. I added in the same fixin’s plus horseradish and bleu cheese—yes, bleu cheese. I realize this sounds awful and, I will admit that even I was scared by my seemingly overzealous concoction; however, the result was amazing. Clamato, you have a new fan!

I wouldn’t want to use Clamato every time, but it had a really good fishy taste (which I realize doesn’t appeal to the masses) and I fell in love. The Old Bay was an excellent complement!

I’m not sure what Dantanna’s charges for the Bloody Mary bar 1) because a friend paid for the drinks and 2) because I ordered it with call vodka (Absolut). I would guess that they charged about $9-$10 (no beer chaser).

Definitely a trendy, hip atmosphere to watch the game and a great bloody bar, but as one follower on Twitter immediately pointed out when I tweeted this photo—where are the cured meats?! Honey, you’re not in Wisconsin anymore, I guess!

Cheers!

The Bloody Best, The Nook, Atlanta

Between Christmas and New Year’s, I went on a roadtrip to Atlanta, Georgia. While there, I had the opportunity to sample Bloody Marys from three different establishments.

The first was from The Nook. If you’ll recall, a few weeks ago, I posted a link to what I am calling my “Bloody Mary Bucket List,” a list first published by Eater.com. I have had the three bloodies from Wisconsin on the list and I made sure to take note of the Nook’s for my impending trip.

Thus, I stopped in to the restaurant on Piedmont Park last Saturday afternoon. I had heard that the Bloody, called the Bloody Best, was outrageous, but I wasn’t quite prepared for it’s size—it is 32 OUNCES of beverage…and breakfast … and has been featured on the Today Show and Huffington Post.

From The Nook: “The Bloody Best boasts 32 ounces of awesomeness with Absolut Peppar vodka, our amazing bloody mary mix, a skewer of tots and steak, a skewer of blue cheese stuffed olives and pepperoncinis, a piece of bacon (of course), a hard boiled egg, piece of toast, and a beef straw (not kidding)!”

Of course, the straw is referring to one of Benny’s Bloody Mary Beef Straws, that you heard about here a couple of months ago.

At 32 ounces (6 ounces of which are Vodka) and $18, this is a Bloody built for two (yes, I ended up sharing). The flavor was great (a little spicy with that Peppar!) and the fixin’s were crazy-good (no chaser though).

This would not be my every Sunday Bloody, but if you’re ever in the area, definitely suggest try out the Nook. Was too full to eat there, but did get a side of their famous Totchos. Yes, that’s right—Nachos made of Tater Tots in a variety of styles. You have to taste ‘em to believe me; they’re grr-eat!

Stay tuned for more reviews from the ATL.

Cheers!

It certainly has been a (Bloody Mary) Christmas as the Bloody Mary gifts keep rolling in! Last night, I received a bottle of Bakon Vodka from my cousin Steve and his wife Sally. My aunt Rose and Uncle Greg gave me a bottle of Zing Zang mix (one of my faves!) and this lovely Bloody Mary t-shirt which reads “Mary Me.”

And then this morning, my parents gave me this Modern Cocktail Bloody Mary spice gift set!

I am now more than all set to mix up some cocktails at home in 2013… I smell a party coming on!

Hope you are all having a safe and Merry Christmas!

Cheers!

Charcoal Grill Bloody Mary

On Thursday, I had off from work and ended up at the Charcoal Grill in New Berlin for lunch with my parents. It was a dreary, rainy/snowy day so I decided to spice it up with a Bloody.

The Charcoal Grill Bloody Mary was very basic—down and dirty vodka/mix, olives, lemon lime and pickle. No fuss, no muss, no flair.

There was nothing bad about this bloody, it just didn’t have a unique twist; however, the price was very reasonable.

Spice: Not very spicy, but still flavorful.

Mix: Unsure.

Chaser: None.

Fixin’s:   Lemon, Lime, olives, pickle.

Price: $5.75

Another Christmas gift has arrived! This time from my boss (and friend), Kathy:

Skyy Vodka & Mr. & Mrs. T’s Bloody Mary Mix! She also included a 365-Day Cocktail Book, which, appropriately, has a recipe for a Bloody Mary on January 1 (best way to start out your year!)b

I have never tried Mr. & Mrs. T’s (a classic, I know), so I’m excited to review that for you in the near future.

Looks like I’ll be making a lot of Bloodies at home in 2013 and that’s quite alright by me!

Joey Gerard’s, Greendale, Wisconsin

Last night, I went to the new Bartolotta’s Supper Club, Joey Gerard’s, with friends (there are two: one in Mequon, one in Greendale—I visited the Greendale location).

When you hear the words “Supper Club,” you automatically think of the 1950s-60s…a time when men like Tom Collins, Harvey Wallbanger and Rob Roy ruled the bar, relish trays were a thing and ice cream drinks capped off a dinner of hearty, beef-y comfort food like stroganoff and wellington. Hmm. Last time I checked it was 2012 (for another week or so at least).

But when you hear Bartolotta’s, you think classy, upscale, and above-all-else, delicious fare. So you give it the benefit of the doubt, throw on your pearls, and make a reservation.

And as usual, Bartolotta’s did not disappoint. In fact, Joey Gerard’s is just the place the Milwaukee-area needs. Supper Clubs were the norm in Wisconsin back in the day and now you’re hard-pressed to find one outside of northern destinations like Door County. We need a place that reminds us of a simpler time—with a modern twist.

Now, I know this is a Bloody Mary blog, but I’m getting to that so bear with me.

To me, a Supper Club seemed like just the place where they’d have a good Bloody. I had no concrete evidence on this, just a gut feeling based on past history with steakhouses, which usually make a mean, flavorful one. I figured this was similar and ordered one with dinner—even thought it wasn’t on the menu.

I was also encouraged by the “Bloody Mary Shrimp Cocktail” listed on the appetizers, so I of course had to order that too!

Now again, I was expecting a decent bloody, but nothing at all like what arrived!

Spice: Not very spicy, but still flavorful.

Mix: Unsure.

Chaser: None.

Fixin’s:   Lemon, Lime, cheese, olives, pickle, pearl onion, Brussels sprout,  beef stick, pepperoncini, mushroom, asparagus and a bean.

Price: $7

This was an excellent drink and immediately cracked my Top 10. I was so tempted to order a second one, but knew I wouldn’t be able to eat all of the garnishes and still put a dent in my meal.

Speaking of the meal…

Yes, the Bloody Mary Shrimp Cocktail (pictured above) was a must. It was very good, but not that special—it was pretty much a shrimp cocktail with okra, a brussels sprout, a pearl onion and a mushroom stuck in the sauce (which was quite spicy). I recommend it if you’re in the mood for shrimp cocktail—but not if you’re looking for that Bloody Mary fix!

We also got an order of raw beef and onions. I know, I know, that freaks many people out, but again, it was a throwback reminding me of Christmas Eves past. Food has the effect on people—triggering memories and emotions!

For dinner, I ordered the French Dip sandwich, while the rest of my party ordered steaks; everyone else also ordered dessert (including a couple of ice cream drinks!) but I was too full to partake.

I will definitely be returning to Joey Gerard’s and I suggest you check it out.

Cheers!

Sobelman’s… PART DEUX.

Yes, I just visited Sobelman’s back in October….but a lot has transpired since then!

Dave Sobelman decided about a month ago to add a slider to the garnishes on the Bloody  along with a chilled shrimp, celery, bacon, sausage and various pickled vegetables.

It was written up in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel….and Huffington Post. If that wasn’t enough, there was a segment on Good Morning America and attention even came from overseas as the Daily Mail, a British tabloid wrote about it.

People were buzzing about Sobelman’s Bloody—and my phone was buzzing as well as friends, family, coworkers and blog followers asked, “Have you tried Sobleman’s Bloody?”

Yes, I told them…but not this one. Of course, that meant I had to check them out again and give them another review!  So, I met my friend Kathryn there tonight for a post-work drink—which practically ended up being dinner as the my cup runneth over with garnishes!

Spice: Not very spicy, but still flavorful.

Mix: Tonight, I was told they use Jimmy Luv’s

Chaser: Miller Lite

Fixin’s:   Lemon, cheese, olive, pickle, pearl onion, brussels sprout,  beef stick, cherry tomato, onion, celery, mushroom, asparagus, a shrimp….and a full-on mini slider, complete with bacon & cheese. (I actually even ended up putting condiments (ketchup and mustard on it!)

Price: $9

The verdict? Well done, Sobelman’s! You didn’t need the burger to be good in my book, but now you’re one of my faves.

For other burger bloodies, check out my review of AJ Bomber’s.

The Ultimate Bloody Louie—Bar Louie’s Bloody Mary.

Yesterday, I was working on finishing up my holiday shopping at Bayshore Mall and decided to pop into Bar Louie for a little lunch; of course, I had to get their bloody to review it for the blog!

I’ve had it before, so I knew it was good—and gigantic!

Spice: The menu describes it as “a little spicy, a little tangy and a whole lot of flavor.” I would concur.

Mix: Unsure, but likely homemade. The bloody also is made with Absolut Peppar, Guinness Stout and Tobasco.

Chaser: None provided, but the bloody itself contains Guinness Stout.

Fixin’s: lemon, lime, two olives, pickle, celery stick, salami and a piece of provolone cheese

Price: Approximately $10

Today, I received an awesome Christmas gift from my friends the Kapczynskis—Hair of the Dawg Bloody Mary Mix and pickled asparagus and bleu cheese olives from West Allis Cheese & Sausage Shoppe. Obviously, they know me well!

I have not had any of these items before and I’m so excited to try them!

Expect a review in the near future. Thanks, Nancy, Gordy and Amanda!

Cheers!
