There is a new restaurant that opened just a couple of weeks ago in Milwaukee called Story Hill BKC (Bottle Kitchen Cup). I was very excited to try this restaurant as it is relatively close to home and even closer to my day job.

I found myself with an afternoon off and stopped in there for lunch; when I found out they also served mixed drinks and had a Bloody Mary on the menu, I decided to try that out as well:

Story Hill BKC Bloody Mary

Mix: Homemade

Chaser:Yes

Fixin’s: Lemon, Lime, Pickle, Celery

Price: $9

The Bloody Mary was the highlight of our meal, but at $9 is quite pricey for what you receive as far as fixin’s, in my opinion.

The mix tasted especially fresh and had a nice kick to it. If it was $2-3 less, I could see myself stopping in here for a Happy Hour once in awhile.

As for the rest of the experience: The establishment, at least inside, is adorable; it has a light, airy feel to it and you can tell they spent a lot of time and care in building and decorating it. It seems like a place where I could sit and drink coffee and enjoy a leisurely breakfast.

The menu is a little eclectic and I’m not sure how well it will do in this area butted up against bars and next door to the stark juxtaposition of “Fat Valdy’s.” Like the bloodies, the rest of the menu is priced on the higher side in my opinion, especially when considering portion size.

My dining companion and I each ordered a salad and it was small and missing some advertised ingredients. We let our server know and hope they are just working out the kinks.

I really would love to see this place thrive in this area and I’m hopeful that they will make appropriate adjustments as they get more comfortable with their clientele, as I would really like to have some options outside of fast, pub and chain food in the area.

Last night, I had drinks at Mo’s-A Place for Steaks in downtown Milwaukee.

As I’ve often said, steak houses are usually good for decent Bloody Marys, so I tried one first:

MOs

Mix: Homemade

Chaser:No

Fixin’s: Two olives, lemon, lime

Price: $?

This Bloody Mary was pretty standard; not great, not bad, just run of the mill. If you check out Mo’s, I recommend ordering one of their many unique martinis, or a good glass of wine, instead.

Last weekend, I had the fortune to dine at the lovely tapas restaurant in Walker’s Point: La Merenda.

Even though I was there for dinner, I was craving a Bloody Mary, so I asked if they had a good one.

“It’s a bit unusual,” the barkeep told me.

My ears perked up.

“We use the sauce for our Patatas Bravas,” he said. I was intrigued. I ordered one. And then another…

La Merenda Bloody Mary

Mix: Homemade (See above).

Chaser:No

Fixin’s: Lemon, Lime and Olive.

Note: I had three of these (don’t judge) and each time, I got an extra olive, so 1=1, 2=2, 3=3. Not sure if it was a different bartender on duty or they were keeping tabs!

Price: $5, on a Friday night, even.

Over the weekend, I dined at Ward’s House of Prime in Milwaukee for the first time. Ward’s is one of Milwaukee’s top steakhouses and since I’ve noticed that steakhouses tend to have great Bloody Marys, I was very excited to see that Ward’s boasts three different varieties on its menu:

Wards House of Prime (1)

Naturally, I had to try the Ward’s House of Prime Bloody Mary.

Unfortunately, it did not arrive as billed on the drink menu:

Wards House of Prime (2)

Okay, so the important parts–the prime rib piece and the shrimp were there, but the blue cheese stuffed olives were missing and instead of a lemon, I got….an orange and a cherry? That’s a first.  I immediately removed those–had to be a mistake on the bartender’s end, I’m guessing?

Anyway, here are the stats

Mix: Ward’s homemade mix with Grey Goose Vodka

Chaser: None offered

Fixin’s: A pickle, prime rib slice, shrimp, lime and…cherry and orange?

Price:$12

Besides the obvious snafu, which I could normally overlook and chalk up to a busy night at the bar, I’m sad to report I just wasn’t impressed with this Bloody Mary. Sure, the prime rib piece was delicious, but other than that, I could barely finish the drink itself. I like spice, but this was overly peppery and the alcohol was overpowering as well.

In addition, dinner here was just okay; I was expecting a lot more for the price and from what I’d been hearing from others. I don’t think we’ll return anytime soon. So many bloodies, so little time.

Unfortunately, they can’t all be winners.

What better way to celebrate Valentine’s Day than with the one you love?

We’re talking about Bloody Marys, of course! We’d been seeing photos of Sobelman’s “Bloody Beast” popping up across the interwebs–with a special heart-shaped pretzel for the holiday–so we decided to check it out.

Sobelmans Bloody Beast (3)

This photo doesn’t really do it justice, but the “Bloody Beast” is a behemoth beverage–the vessel that it comes in is actually a pitcher. Yes, that’s right, a pitcher of Bloodies! (Sobelman’s says it’s the equivalent of five Bloody Marys.) It was even featured on The Chive.

It is served with four chasers and contains a buffet of fixin’s including: 2 sliders (on buns), 4 shrimp, 4 pickles, 4 olives, asparagus, cherry tomatoes, cheeses, beef sticks…and bacon-wrapped tater tots.

Here’s another closeup, more of an aerial view:

The pretzel is courtesy of Milwaukee Pretzel Company.

Sobelman’s uses Jimmy Luv’s as their mix and local vodka from Great Lakes Distillery.

The Bloody Beast will cost you $35, but that’s pretty reasonable considering we couldn’t finish the pitcher and walked away full.

I definitely encourage all Bloody Mary aficionados to try this at least once–fun for a group, too!

Cheers!

Steny’s Tavern

Last weekend, we also visited Steny’s Tavern on 2nd & National.

Steny’s makes some big claims about their Bloody Marys, so naturally, we had to verify or deny them:

According to Steny’s website, Steny’s Bloody Mary was named #1 Bloody at an event last August… we’ll be the judge of that!

Steny’s menu even has an entire page dedicated to the history of their Bloodies:

And, from 11am-6pm on Saturdays and Sundays, they offer the Bloodies for just $4 each.

(Unfortunately, we didn’t have a chance to inquire about the Bloody Mary Club—-maybe they will fill us in on that!)

Anyway, here’s what you’ve been waiting for: Steny’s Bloody Mary.

Mix: Made from scratch

Chaser: Yes

Fixin’s: Pickle, olive

Price: $4

The taste of the Bloody Mary was a little on the spicier side, but other than that, I’m sorry to say, this was a pretty standard Bloody Mary. The price is great when you hit the special on the weekends, but I”m not sure this warrants a trip down there on a regular basis.

I’ve been meaning to get to Oscar’s on Pierce since last Opening Day when I came across an image on Twitter of a special Bloody Mary that included a brat as a fixin’!

Well, last weekend I finally got there and, while the brat was a one-day only special, their “everyday” bloodies are fantastic!

Mix: Made from scratch

Chaser: Yes

Fixin’s: Pickle, celery, olive, cheese, lemon and bacon

Price: $7.50

My dining companion and I both agreed that Oscar’s “soon to be famous” Bloody Marys were delicious; extremely flavorful with kind of a unique “smoky” aftertaste. We will definitely be back to Oscar’s soon and next time, we’ll come hungry because the food looked amazing and the scent of burgers was heavy in the air.

Coast

I recently visited Coast in Milwaukee  for a work function. The majority of the attendees were drinking beer and wine, but of course I ordered a Bloody Mary.

I  should have known better than to order a Bloody so late when it wasn’t their focus, but I can never resist.

The verdict? Pretty standard:

Mix: I saw it being poured from a small can.

Chaser: No

Fixin’s: Lemon, Lime, Two Olives

Price: $Unknown

I recently dined at the new Red Dot in Wauwatosa.

Formerly Sherbrooke, I had enjoyed Bloodies in this establishment in the past.

Under the same ownership, much of the menu is similar (yep-they still have poutine!); however, it looks like they’ve added some new Bloodies to their list—always a great improvement. I last reviewed the Garlic Basil Bloody, so I decided to try the “Rabbit’s Revenge” this time.

Made with home-infused carrot & ginger vodka with a touch of garlic-infused honey, this was definitely an interesting drink.

Spice: A mix of sweet and spicy.

Mix: Unknown; I have learned that I do enjoy house-infused vodka though!

Chaser: Yes

Fixin’s: Pickle, Olive, Meat and Cheese

Price: $8

I love this little restaurant and am so happy to see Tosa hustling and bustling with all of the new additions. I hope Red Dot sticks around for a long time!

This past weekend,  was finishing up some holiday shopping at Bayshore Mall and decided to pop in to the new Sprecher Restaurant and Pub for lunch.

To my surprise (and delight), I realized their drink menu also featured a special Bloody Mary: The Bloody Boot.

Spice: Very spicy, taste-wise and the amount of pepper/spices floating in the drink itself.

Mix: Unknown

Chaser: No (VERY surprising considering Sprecher is a brewery afterall)

Fixin’s: Lemon, Lemon, Celery, Olive, Pickle Slice, Cheese Curd

Price: $8 for the 28-oz boot (which you get to keep, well, to boot!) which entitles you to $5 refills, or $5 for pints.

All in all, I was pleasantly surprised to find that Sprecher had a specialty Bloody Mary. I also very much liked the look and feel of the place and the menu is very “Sconnie” yet broad, so there is sure to be something for everyone. I highly recommend you check it out next time you’re over in the Bayshore area!
